back in action

ok, I’m back from two weeks holiday in India. Anyone who hasn’t been and have the possibility to go… just go!  absolutely full on!, never stops, off the scale mad, an amazing country! This was my third time there, but the place never stops to amaze me.

This time was for leisure, while the previous two trips where used to shoot the re-enactments for our treasure hunt documentary in Afghanistan. I shall upload pics from this trip soon, but I’m also working on getting my photoshelter account up and running properly and more shots from this and other trips and projs will be shown there.

in the meantime, before, after and during the trip, i’ve been working on scripts – both my own and other’s that i hope to direct. horror and thrillers are wepons of choice at the moment. i guess that’s what the market is calling for mostly, but it’s also where my unguided interest seems to be pulling towards at the moment.

i’m going back to sweden this week to work with a scriptwriter there to develop his script for the international market, but also hoping to put some words on paper on my own stuff this month. the general idea is to have one or two workable scripts ready by spring.. and time’s runnig out!

i’ve recently found some really useful online articles that unexpectedly provided new interesting tools for structuring stories for the big screen. i thought i was saturated with the usual script-writer-mumbo-jumbo and had heard it all over and over a million times, but some of these workflows to x-check, x-ray and develop the structure properly really shines with their simplicity and usefullness. i’ll post them next time around..

if anyone reading this is intersted in further specific thoughts on script writing, – please ask questions to help me come up with topics and structure for these blog posts. i would love to actually be able to write about my experiences and knowledge of scripts and in a way that would actually help people – in the meantime i’m trying to conjole my book/script-writing friends to start blogs here and write about their creative workflows and processes.

ok it’s my girlfriends first day at her new job tomorrow and my grandad’s 91 birthday on wedn and between those i have to kick-start one or two productions, so i’d better get some rest or people are going to complain.

i’ll try to make this a bit more frequent and rich on information in the next coming posts.

over and out

Lithivm Part 1 walk-through

Ok, first off, the title sequence. Our DP (Director of Photography) Mårten Nilsson had, since a long time before we got to know him, made experimental short films. It was because of them that we had decided to work with him on our first film Summertime (Vackert Väder).

When we now were about to finish Lithivm, our third film working together, Mårten and I decided to take the liberty to do something extra with the intro. Over the months in between the films I had seen several of the films Mårten and Kenneth Cosimo, the music composer who created the main score for both Night Bus 807 and Lithivm, had done together earlier. If I remember right, they were even making another one of those in between during the shooting of Lithivm and some of the footage of that film were used on the screens in the bar sequence around the middle of the film. Anyway, I was keen to get some of Mårten’s work into my film, without my tampering with it, to enhance the mood of the feature, but also because of the strong dark mood in Lithivm really could stand up to something such as an experimental visual short right at the beginning of it.

Mårten set to work with his s8mm camera. We timed it to the music composition by Cosimo, and early on decided that it would simply run the duration of the song with minimal amount of credits, even though it was a ‘title sequence’ a la Seven .

In hindsight it amazes me, the liberty we took, never asking the distributors or marketing people if it was ok that we did this – we simply had a go at what we wanted to do, and didn’t ask too many questions. After all it was our film…

I’m still surprised every time I sit in on a screening of Lithivm and the music starts to those shaky real, but somehow really distrubing ordinary images – it’s without a doubt for me one of my favourite parts of the film.

Ok, this is becoming a bit more detailed than intended. I will continue with Part 1 of Lithivm in the next post, but I’ll try to boil it down maybe just a bit more. Or maybe not talk about everything.

Have a look at the intro in teh clip below..

see you on the next one /d

arrival

Welcome to my blog @ caravan film. This is a first post, edited with the iphone… very cool that it’s so easy to set up. Thanks to the people at wordpress for providing nice and clear documentation.

This is me on the train back from Oxford, after having held a lecture in script writing at Brookes university.

To stay prolific we take pride in everyone being quite all-round here at caravan film, everyone is expected to take on everything between producing, writing and editing, graphics and websites. Because of this we often have to dive into larger technical subjects than we had planned for. This carries a rewarding result most of the time, but it always leads to us solving bigger problems than we set out to do. I will try to post some of these solutions here, whether it’s getting open source code to work on our websites or work-flows we use her in the office.

Mainly, though, I’ll try to write about our adventures as filmmakers.

More content specific blogging coming soon.
